Better Workout With Better Duds by , ACE, ACSM, Personal Trainer/Fitness Specialist
I've said it for years: Every time I come home with my Nike bags full of shoes, shorts, and tops I can't wait to test drive them on the treadmill. Feeling the part can increase caloric burn during your gym time. As much as you would love to invest in that expensive pair of Louboutin's you've been drooling over for weeks, it may be in your body's better interest to add to your fitness wardrobe instead.
Get the 411 on what you need for your gym bag:
Just like your business attire, you need some basics for your gym bag. It's always safe to invest in a great pair of high quality Lycra pants or capris in a dark color if you are just beginning your fitness/fashion quest. Navy blue and Black are most popular.
Express your personality on top but make sure workout tops are conducive to just that: working out. You will want to focus on how hard your pushing yourself not what's falling out or creeping up, although, it is okay to show off your assets and hide what you're at the gym to improve.
Strong back: Opt for a racer back tank-top.
Arms with a little extra jiggle: Reach for a sleeved shirt made of dry fit material. It will reduce motion when pumping your arms and creates a barrier between the skin to lessen likelihood of a rash.
Lastly, the most important piece in your gym bag are the shoes. Don't be stingy when it comes to price. Be willing to spend anywhere between $50-$120 for a good pair. Do your research on your own or with some help. If you know your arch, width, and gait, get online and find shoes that will be most comfortable and supportive to your shock-absorbers. No clue? Many cities have multiple sporting goods and clothing stores that provide gait assessment. You will walk out knowing if you are a pronator or a supinator and have the shoe to match. Grab a pair of cotton/lycra blend ankle socks while you're shopping. They make legs look their best. Anything higher could give your ankles a bulky appearance.
Of course, don't forget to update your iPod with new songs to get you pumped up.
