Trendy Thursday: How to be Tailgate Trendy
Tailgate Trendy
I can see the stadium from my backyard. I can hear the band practice every night. And, I watch the news as they cover Notre Dame football news. It's tailgate season -- the only time when it's acceptable to guzzle brewskis for breakfast. (Of course, this year I'll be sipping on some ginger ale or herbal tea.)
Ladies, this is not a free-for-all when it comes to wardrobe. No PJ's or dirty sweat pants allowed. You're in a public venue. You're among friends, co-workers, and relatives. Here's your guide to dress appropriately while still keeping it stylish.
Starting from the Top...
The Head - Do your hair even if a cute ball cap is going over it and vibe up dull locks with a colorful ribbon, headband, or pin. If your pony-tailin' it make sure it still looks polished. Try a trendy Bump-it pony to add volume at the top.
The Eyes - Sunglasses are a must. It may look cloudy but the weather is unpredictable and you don't want to have to make your ugly squint-face all day long. Also, I know it's a sporting event but YOU AREN'T PLAYING so ditch the sporty shades like Oakleys and go for style instead. Oversized, turtle shell, embellished, whatever. As long as it's a current trend.
The Torso - Layers!!! You can always stuff a hoody or shirt in your bag. The worst is being hot, sweaty, and miserable on what should be a fun time had by all. And, if you're going to rid your body of some extra threads such as a long sleeve shirt and strut around in a tank top MAKE IT MEANINGFUL. It should be the color of the team your're rooting for or have your team's logo on it. NO WIFE-BEATERS! They show sweat, get dirty easily, and are usually somewhat see-through.
The Legs - Cold weather? Slide in some jeans that are cute and comfy. Hot weather? Pick shorts that are an appropriate length and don't ride up as you walk around. Nothing is attractive about a habitual wedgie picker. Somewhere in the middle weather? Dri-fit capris in black are always a safety haven. Comfy and sleek. And, Jeans capris just don't work for me. Sorry.
The Feet - Balance fashion with foot love. You don't want aching feet dampering your mood. If wearing sandals, make sure toes are done and bring wipes to occasionally clean the dirt that will inevitably accumulate on your feet. Please do this in private such, as in the bathroom. Tennis shoes more your tailgating trend? Don't slip on your favorite 10-year-old pair with holes in them. A great pair of stylish Nike's are always fine by me.
The Bag - I have a very functional Gucci waist bag that my friends jokingly call a fanny pack. Well, fanny pack or not, it's Gucci and Gucci is always in style. Not a fan of drawing attention to your waistline? No problem. Opt for an across-the-shoulder messenger tote that's no fuss and stay with you at all times. Losing your purse could be a worst case scenario during your tailgating.
Lastly, mingle, eat, talk, cheer, and HAVE A FAB TIME!!!
Send me a picture of your best tailgating outfit and we will post it here.

How To Tame A Cowlick
I know most of my beauty and fashion blogger colleagues are chatting up Black Friday this morning, but I have a more important issue at hand. I have been having a bad hair day -- year! My double cowlicks have been battling for territorial rights. Working with my stylist yesterday, I thought we might have conquered the dreaded enemy, but to my dismay, upon arriving home and arming myself with my big hand mirror, I gasped in horror when I saw the back of my head.
"Agh!"
There was hair spiraling like a tropical cyclone on the top left and hair coiling like a snake in a basket who had been hypnotized by a snake charmer on the top right and down the back of my head, a straight part that halved the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere of my brain.
On top of that, there was an Alfalfa cowlick sticking up like the middle finger on a hand giving the world the bird.
And it didn't take much coiling for me to see my Buster Brown bangs carved on the front of my forehead either!
Did I say I have been having a bad hair year?
On top of this, I discovered that gravity -- Hasn't the wicked witch of menopause already exerted enough gravitational pull on my body? -- is playing a dirty trick with my hair.
One of my cowlicks is a bit lower down the back of the head; hence, the hair that wants to grow and lie forward toward the front of the head has to fight against gravity. Because it's fighting gravity, it's not lying the way it wants to. When hair doesn't lie the way it wants to, it will stick up. Hence, my middle finger, Alfalfa look.
I'm trying to be grateful that I HAVE hair, knowing that gratitude is the key to peace and happiness, but c'mon, I now have Buster Brown bangs and double Alfalfa cowlicks for Christmas. And all I wanted was my two front teeth -- veneers.
Ah, but knowledge is power, and I'm going to kick my cowlicks' butt with knowledge.
Researching my options, I came up with five ways to tame cowlicks.

How To Wear Your Pony Tail
Fall Beauty Trend: Ponytails
This season us gals want super-signature looks with minimal prep time. We have things to do, places to go, people to see. Fabulous without the fuss. Just like the celebs.
Since I pretty much live in a ponytail, I have tried and perfected many a 'do. My signature style: a side-part, loose pony with volume on top...the messier the better.
Whether you are working out, doing some fall tailgating, or are fancy-ing it up, you can pick the perfect pony for every occasion.
Here are my top pony picks:
The Polished Pony:
Brittany Snow with a Side Pony :

(Keep this one low to lessen your chances of being mistaken for a kindergartner on their first day of school)
The bouffant pony: Eva Mendes, Kristen Bell and Ashlee Simpson pump up their ponytails' volume with teased crowns:
For all ladies with bangs, you can still pull off the pony. Just sweep them to the side.
Keeping your hair maintenance at a minimum is a fall beauty trend that should be on every girl's 'do list.

The Blunt-Banged Bob - The New All-Flattering 'Do?
In a Glamour magazine email that I recieved this morning, it was asking the following:
Summer 2008 Celeb Hairstyle Trend: Pixie-Crop
According to WWD, "Get ready to hit the scissors. This season's hottest models had one thing in common: short hair. From Agyness Deyn, who has parlayed her one-day-platinum-the-next-day brunette buzz cut to superstardom, to Freja Beha Erichsen (shown above), who reportedly lopped off her locks herself, a cropped top was all the rage for spring."
From Pob to Bob to the shortest of the short Pixie-Crop, short hair is this summer's best accessory.
Another celeb who sported a cropped mane was Natalie Portman. The crop look fabulous with her heart-shaped face.
Another celebrity who made the scary move of chopping off her locks was Michelle Williams. If you looked up "pixie" in the dictionary, I bet you would find Michelle's picture. She exudes innocence with this style.
Elisha Cuthbert is the latest celebrity to confidently wear the pixie-crop.
This haircut needs a woman comfortable in her own skin, with a big twist of attitude. This look can shout independence and boldness, or young and funky, or sharp and elegant depending on the person's personality, how it is worn, and what is worn with it. If you've got it -- that attitude that is -- flaunt it.
What do you think of the trendy pixie-crop?
