Tall, blonde, sporty Rebecca Romijn is the cover girl on Self Magazine in the August 2008 issue. She reports "how she finds joy every day."
Is Self Magazine Indistinguishable from Cosmo or Glamour?
Jezebel wasn't finding the joy in this month's issue. According to Jezebel, Self has become a Cosmo clone:
Self is supposed to be the healthy, life-affirming ladymag. But take a look at the August cover. You've got articles about diet, skin, butts (of course), sex — and electric bills. Swap Rebecca Romijn's sporty shorts outfit for a gown, and this cover would be indistinguishable from Cosmo or Glamour. And it's pretty much like those mags on the inside too, except where Cosmo kind of owns its brain-rotting silliness, Self couches everything in an obnoxious rhetoric of self-improvement. It's like candy disguised as vegetables, except the candy tastes bad, and makes you feel bad about yourself. A breakdown of this month's crappy advice for several aspects of your life, after the jump.
Although there is a lot of candy-coated self-improvement tips and "Better-Sex Secrets!" we found a hand full of information-worthy reads on health and wellness, gifts, contacting Congress, and dermatologist's fave beauty products you can buy at your local drugstore:
Exercise your rights: Visit HealthClubs.com to encourage Congress to support the Personal Health Investment Today Act. This Act would allow you to pay most fitness-related costs from a pretaxed account, saving you approximately 30 percent a year.
Where to buy personalized gifts: Did you know that more people are born in July and August than any other month? Beckie has an August birthday and definitely has the personality of a Leo. For your August and July friends' birthdays, buy them a customized gift like an inscribed necklace from Tiffany.com -- hint, hint, Mr. Hubster -- create your own stationery from HerGals.com, or a jewelry pouch from Smythson.com.
Get Well Sooner: Green tea may help the medicine go down...and work better, too. A study found that taking your antibiotic with a cup of green tea tripled the antibiotics' efficacy.
PMS-Proof Your Diet: Certain foods can satisfy your preperiod carb craving, get rid of your mood swings, bloating, and cramps. Eat 300 to 400 milligrams for magnesium-rich foods like spinach, artichokes, and a handful of almonds to manage moodiness. To beat the bloat, eat potassium rich veggies like asparagus and fruit such as bananas and strawberries and melon. To curtail the cramps, consume calcium plus vitamin D. To satisfy the cravings, reach for whole-grain carbs that activate serotonin production, a mood lifting brain chemical.
Budget Skin Care: Dermatologist reveal that their favorite affordable age erasers for the face are Eucerin Redness Relief, Dove Deep Moisture SPF 15, Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Eye Cream, and Biore Pre Unclogging Scrub.
