Although we adore print magazines, we are always leery of beauty editors' lists of favorite beauty products or their Best of the Best lists.
Why? Because big advertising dollars may influence or brainwash the staff's favorites.
But we admire and trust ShopSmart.
Launched in the fall 2006, ShopSmart, a sister magazine of Consumer Reports, draws upon Consumer Reports’ celebrated tradition of accepting no advertisements and providing unbiased product reviews.
In their recent Best of the Best mascara lists, 34 women tested 16 lengthening and/or thickening formulas of mascara. Was the winner the darling of print magazines, Maybelline Great Lash Washable mascara?

Lancôme was the official makeup sponsor of Fashion Focus Chicago. This premier fashion week began on October 1st and featured the city's top emerging designers. Lancôme National Makeup Artist and Chicago native Alex Sanchez created the looks for all five runway shows including: Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion featuring Clandestine Industries, World Fashion Chicago presented by Sister Cities International, Dress Code of The Chicago Fashion Design School, Allure of Couture, and the Designers of Chicago Show presented by Macy's. In celebration of the Fashion Focus Chicago sponsorship, Lancôme also created a special makeup collection that will be available exclusively at select Chicago Macy's locations until October 31st. A portion of the proceeds from the collection will benefit The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI), a fashion program that supports six emerging Chicago-based designers

Alex Sanchez is working his makeup magic on a model before the Macy's show on Tuesday, October 7th. Read more.

While vacationing in Florida for the month, I thought I had all my bases covered -- Lancome UV Expert 20 sunscreen with mexoryl for my face and body, zinc oxide to cover those delightful freckled age spots, a Coolibar hat that keeps out 99 percent UVA and UVB rays, but guess what I forgot to address? My lips! With lips beyond recognition, I traversed through the kitchen to find a quick, effective, and inexpensive remedy for my swollen and painful lips.
With lips like Angelina Jolie's, I should have been ecstatic, but not only did I have newfound plump lips, but I had a newfound speech impediment. With increased volume triple of my original lips, I couldn't enunciate my words. My first day on the beach, I made the unfortunate mistake of applying a conventional lip balm containing petrolatum-based ingredients, but because the molecules are too big, lip skin can't absorb the ingredients, and now my sunburned Angelina Jolie lips need TLC.
To return my lips from Botox plump and sunburned sexy to thin and deflated (oh, can't I hold onto the Angelina Jolie look without the pain), here are 2 effective remedies for sunburned or chapped lips:
- Mix a dab of honey with brown sugar and massage lips with a toothbrush. Sugar is a naturally abrasive exfoliant, and honey contains an exfoliating enzyme, as well as a mild antiseptic that kills bacteria and a natural humectant that helps the skin retain moisture.
- Another natural exfoliant is sugar cane, a source of glycolic acid, which exfoliates and hydrates. You can make a paste of sugar and olive oil and massage it on your lips with a toothbrush.
Natural moisturizers like shea butter, beeswax, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or hempseed oil, all of which can naturally penetrate the skin, is what I should have had in my beach lip and skin care arsenal. If you would rather buy a product, the two listed below offer you some of the same benefits as the do-it-yourself versions with more convenience, but you can save $30 by doing it yourself. That's brains on beauty.
Jane Iredale's Sugar and Butter Lip Duo ($24 Lovelyskin.com)
Buddha Nose Certified Organic Lip Balm ($6 Amazon.com)
You can find me at the beach. Between the sunscreen, my large Coolibar hat, dots of zinc oxide, and my Angelina Jolie lips, I'm not sure you would recognize me. But if you do, pull up a beach chair and chat a while.

Welcome to the third installment of 12 Beauty and Fashion Essentials for 2008. In this ongoing series, you will discover your own personal style and ring in the new year with confidence.
Did you have a grand New Year's Eve? My small posse and I traversed through a foot of snow to a few watering holes, and then came back and took photos of the dogs in New Year's apparel. My New Year's resolution should be to refrain from using the bodacious beagle and the chichi chihuahua as models and restore their animal pride, but I swear they seem to love every photo shoot. They get the most delish treats when they are finished. Not bad pay for a few minutes of work.
On to the essential "stuff." Are you ready to slough off your old skin and expose a fresher YOU? In my opinion, you only need two weapons in your arsenal:
retinoids and sunscreen. "Retinoids are the one topical treatment actually proven to regenerate collagen," according to Marsha Gordon, vice chairman of the dermatology department at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In addition to smoothing the surface of the skin, evening out tone, increasing blood flow, unclogging pores, regenerating collagen, retinoids and even over-the-counter vitamin A derivatives have been proven to prevent some types of skin cancers.
20 years ago I started using
Retin -A because both my mother and father had skin cancer on their faces. I wasn't looking for a wrinkle cure at that age; I was looking for skin cancer prevention. But my skin has benefited on both counts. On the other hand, I didn't use
Retin-A on my hands, nor sunscreen, and my hands look
much older than my age.
Okay,
tanorexics, listen closely. Stay out of the tanning beds, and use sunscreen. Oh, how I wish I had been more consistent about using sunscreen in the past. I know that some of the benefits I gained from using
Retin A were erased by my non-use of sunscreen. According to dermatologists,
MexorylSX is the most effective
UVA-blocking ingredient currently available. It has been used in Canada and Europe since 1993 but approved by the FDA for use in the U.S. i

n July 2006. Sunscreen products containing
MexorylSX have been slow to enter the U.S. market. Right now, only a handful of products are available containing
Mexoryl in the U.S.
LaRoche-
PosayAntheliosSX is a facial moisturizer that contains
MexorylSX. More widely available is
Lancôme UV Expert 20 , a face and body lotion with
MexorylSX.
Have a healthy and pale new year. Don't worry your pretty, little head over the paleness. You can always soak yourself in self-tanner.
