Ask Amanda: Topical Skin Care Products

Posted on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:00AM

black and white picture of young woman in black dressA reader asks and Amanda answers in Girl-Woman-Beauty-Brains-Blog's series. Learn what every woman needs to know about how to determine what topical skin care products are worth your hard-earned dollars.

Dear Amanda:

Can you help me through the myriad of skin care products on the market? It's overwhelming. Should I buy over-the-counter products or department store products? I am in my late twenties and starting to see a few wrinkles.

Thanks,
Steph

Hi Steph:

Many topical products are available claiming to reverse aging and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Antiaging skin care cream is available by prescription, at your aesthetic treatment provider’s office, and over the counter. Many over the counter products contain the same active ingredients as the costly competitors.

What creams are the best low price antiaging cream?

First, you must decide what exactly you are trying to improve; then decide on your
approach. Oftentimes, there are many steps to “anti aging treatment," but if
you are like me, it must be simple.

My regimen is this:
  • ($40) http://www.revaleskin.com/

  • Apply RevaleSkin Night Cream ($110) every morning prior to applying makeup

  • Apply TriLuma Skin Lightening Cream every other night 1 hour prior to going
to bed (this Prescription bleaching agent targets sun damage, and areas of
hyperpigmentation as well as fine lines as it contains a retinoid. The cost
has decreased significantly and is the most effective bleaching agent available)

  • Apply RevaleSkin Night Cream every night before going to sleep

Total cost: $250 for 5 months of product

If you choose to purchase over-the-counter skin care creams, I have ONLY ONE recommendation as the product is developed for all skin types, is non-greasy, and achieves improvement:

1. NEUTROGENA--dermatologists
developed, products contain an SPF 30 and higher, light weight, contain active
ingredients to meet the needs of anyone seeking to improve and enhance his/her
appearance.

REMEMBER, ALL PRODUCTS REQUIRE LONG TERM USE TO SEE IMPROVEMENT AND GAIN LONG LASTING EFFECTS. IMPROVEMENT IS TYPICALLY NOTICED AFTER 6-8 WEEKS OF USING THE PRODUCT.

Do not base your product purchase on price, many products are overpriced and the improvement in your appearance will be minimal.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns about any skin care products, please feel free to .

Best,

Amanda

Hi,Very nice beauty blog you have here. Found your blog after searching information for makeup reviews. Thanks for the great information! My name is Irene and I'm involved in an online beauty community website called http://www.ColorMeGorgeous.com. I was hoping that you would have a minute to check out the site and perhaps if you liked what you saw... write about it on your blog?I may be going out on a limb by asking you for promotional help through your blog, but I hope you find ColorMeGorgeous.com to be as news worthy/helpful as I perceive it to be. There's still a lot of work to be done with it, but I'm working on it. It's hard to compete when you're a small fish in a huge sea with huge sites like MUA and the likes, but I do what I can Smiling My favorite part of the site is the 'critic's corner' where members can review or read up on various product reviews for makeup and skincare. Then there's always the forum, the photo gallery, the ask a makeup artist page, etc. Thanks for your time :)Best,Irene

I love E Burnham products for the various anti-aging needs. I especially like the night cream that leaves my skin youthful and the neck decollete firming cream also helps the chicken neck issue. OOOOOOOOOHHHHH and you can't beat the price!
